Windsong is a non-profit independent school in Spokane, Washington.

Windsong School is committed to teaching according to the methods of Waldorf Education. Our vision is to provide an education that keeps intact a child’s love of learning, cultivates flexible thinking, enriches a connection to nature and the world around them, and provides students with a foundation that will allow them to shape the future positively.

Our faculty-led school shares beliefs that guide us in our work: a willingness to strive and develop, to work out of what we know about child development and Anthroposophy, to teach creatively and with love, and to nurture our parent community. We have a strong in-house mentoring program. New Windsong faculty and staff will join a fun-loving, hardworking, and sincere faculty, will be supported by a friendly and efficient administrative team, and will lead a passionate and engaged parent body.

Windsong serves students in Parent-Child, Early Childhood, and Grades programs that include grades 1-8 as well as six specialty subjects. We have approximately 110 students currently enrolled.

Our school is located above the scenic Spokane River on the historic Mukogawa US 76-acre campus, woven through with antique walkways and quiet tree-lined streets. We enjoy trail access to the Spokane River and abundant nature opportunities. Our campus is only 5 minutes from downtown Spokane.

Points to consider before applying to Windsong School:

Waldorf education rests on the tenets of Anthroposophy, a spiritualized philosophy that informs our outlook on the human experience. Our educational practices rest on the observations and insights of Waldorf educators who use Anthroposophy as a framework, along with mainstream research on effective educational practices and child development. Windsong School’s Early Childhood Program is a Full Member of Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN).

Windsong School has experienced extraordinary growth since its founding almost 15 years ago. Our workspace and campus are unconventionally laid out. This situation leads to opportunities for familiarity, much student and staff interaction, requires a high degree of cultivated and committed camaraderie from all staff members. The benefits are manifold, but those who do not possess strong interpersonal skills may find themselves unable to enjoy the busy atmosphere.

Our mission to make Waldorf education accessible to all, along with the rapid school growth we’ve seen over the past years, has cultivated a culture of financial prudence. A degree of resourcefulness and an ability to use simplicity as a tool will be required.

Windsong practices teacher looping, a foundational feature of Waldorf education, in which a teacher remains with the same class for multiple years to support continuity and deep relationship-building. In Windsong’s Mixed-Age Kindergarten program, children typically stay in the same class with the same teacher until they move into 1st grade. In the grades program, students often continue with the same teacher for multiple years, and in some cases through 8th grade. At the same time, as a small school, Windsong remains responsive to the needs of the organization and individual classes. Teacher assignments may occasionally be adjusted with careful attention to the health and needs of the school community as a whole.

For lead positions, two weeks of scheduled commitments are required during the summer holiday. Significant preparation in the summer is necessary in the form of a one-week professional development class that requires out-of-town travel, classroom arrangements, extensive study, personal skills practice, and materials preparation.

Employment Opportunities:

Early Childhood Lead Teacher

The early childhood class teacher is often an inaugural representative of our school, as many families find their way to us during the early childhood years. This teacher can expect to work deeply with parents as they delve more fully into our pedagogy and school practices, as well as with students, who are becoming newly aware of themselves and their social counterparts. This teacher will be mentored by an experienced Windsong lead class teacher during their first two years and can expect to meet through the summer and weekly during the school year with this mentor.  Class sizes are around 18 students, ages three to six and a half. Classrooms are staffed with a lead and an assistant teacher.

Requirements: Ideal candidates are experienced teachers who are Waldorf-certified or enrolled in a training program and possess a Bachelor’s degree. At a minimum, prospective candidates will be willing to pursue certification as Waldorf teachers, have experience working with school-aged children, and have the equivalent of two years of higher education. This teacher assignment is expected for the 2027-28 academic year, dependent on enrollment.

Benefits and Salary: Benefits include 100% tuition remission, professional development support, one week of personal time off, and five weeks of school-year holiday.

Substitute Teacher

Substitute teachers play an important role in maintaining the rhythm and continuity of the school day when a regular teacher is absent. A substitute can expect to work with students across our Early Childhood and Grades Programs while following the established practices, lesson plans, and rhythms of each classroom. Substitutes work alongside and are supported by experienced Windsong faculty and staff, and should bring flexibility, warmth, and a willingness to step into the needs of the school. Opportunities are available on an as-needed basis throughout the school year and may range from partial-day to full-day assignments.

Requirements: Ideal candidates have classroom experience and enjoy working with children. The position requires the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and meet the physical demands of an active school environment, including the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Waldorf teacher training or previous experience in a Waldorf classroom is a plus. Substitutes are expected to follow established organizational and classroom procedures, support the rhythms and expectations of the classroom, and maintain student and family confidentiality.
